Unfortunately, it can also be a refuge for hostile conspiracies and hate. Here's a sampler of some the best queer sites. We've added some anti-queer sites, too. It's always good to know what's out there. This monumental search engine lets you find queer and bisexual resources either geographically (gay hotels in Malta!) or by topics as specific as queer booksellers, fishing tours or underwear merchants. Supporting Our Youth's funky, youth-friendly site has information on the Toronto org's mentoring and housing and art-based programs, groups for trans, black and new immigrant queer youth and more. Site coming out of Quebec gives the goods on issues and events relevant to queer youth. Includes advice, fashion and must-attend events. PlanetOut Inc's Corporate Pride Directory is a combination of Fortune magazine's list of the 1,000 largest American companies and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Corporate Equality Index, which rates how America's biggest companies treat their gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees. See how some of the companies you patronize stack up in their commitment to human rights. The home base of Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell, the couple who blew the lid off the debate in early 2001 by getting married at Toronto's Metropolitan United Church. Sign petitions, read articles, write letters and do some research on the legal ramifications of same-sex marriage rights in Canadian provinces. Since parent company PlanetOut Inc ( www.planetout.com ) launched it in 2001, this site has grown into the biggest queer matchmaking service in cyberspace. It has 3.3 million members in 100 countries and recently applied to the Securities and Exchange Commission to become a publicly traded company. The most complete events and issues site for T.O. lesbians, with everything from lesbo hockey news to hot DJ nights. This Web site, devoted to lesbian visibility worldwide, offers links to dyke-related projects of all kinds. Know thine enemy www.family.org See what the haters are doing on this site recently featured in some half-page ads in the Toronto Star. Here, the Christian group Focus on the Family attempts to "cure" homosexuals and thus prevent the destruction of the "American family." The American Family Association, in a fit of fundamentalist paranoia, is calling for a boycott of Disney due to their "promotion of the homosexual lifestyle" through ABC's Ellen DeGeneres Show and the films distributed by Miramax. |
